On-the-ground expertise

When a Turkish customer purchased a Potain MCT 185 to work at Istanbul’s Tersane project, a dedicated Manitowoc team flew in from Zhangjiagang, China, to facilitate its commissioning and conduct training. Looking Up goes behind the scenes to learn about the on-site benefits of this valued-added service.

For a Potain tower crane to deliver maximum productivity, it needs both expert engineering during manufacturing and skilled operation when it’s on-site. So when Görgülü İnşaat, the main contractor at Istanbul’s Tersane port revitalization project, purchased a new Potain MCT 185 through local dealer AHS VINÇ, the company also engaged a dedicated commissioning and training option to get the crane working as swiftly as possible and to ensure immediate results.

A team from Manitowoc’s factory in Zhangjiagang, China, traveled to Turkey to commission the crane and conduct on-site training. Looking Up spoke to Manitowoc’s field service manager, Zhang Yuanxiong, who led the operation, to understand how this service works and what advantages it offers.

Yuanxiong has 18 years of experience at Manitowoc as a maintenance expert and an impressive range of skills he applies to help customers understand common technical issues and their solutions.

“All of us at Manitowoc are proud of the training we deliver to customers. It reaffirms our commitment to first-class customer service and professionalism. With Potain cranes, customers get the highest quality products, but with our added training and immersion courses, it ensures operational excellence from the outset,” Yuanxiong said.

Prior to arriving on site, the team from Manitowoc prepares a detailed briefing on the local jobsite, including weather, working conditions, personnel, and more. This thorough preparation also ensures that safety, which is Manitowoc’s number one priority, is integral to the guidance and instructions tailored to the customer. The briefing includes specific safety protocols and risk assessments to address any potential hazards. This allows them to prepare guidance and instruction tailored to the customer. Because the training takes place on the crane that’s on-site, it’s much easier and faster for team members to absorb the information, helping to raise productivity levels.

“Operating a tower crane on a dam construction is different to working on a new office complex. Working in the heat of the Middle East requires different preparation to the freezing locations around the Arctic. Our experience of conditions and projects is what helps us deliver targeted services to customers. Ultimately, with our support customers will see improved efficiency, lower downtime and increased profitability.”

The new Tersane development is set along Istanbul’s idyllic waterline and will transform the historic Ottoman shipyards into a modern and dynamic urban hub. Spanning 242,000 sq. m, the development features luxury waterfront residences, seamlessly combining historic charm with modern amenities. The waterfront residences will offer diverse food, retail, and entertainment options, all set against the backdrop of the picturesque Golden Horn.
